Labette Health to Provide Free Sports Physicals

PARSONS, Kan., May 21, 2010Labette Health clinicians will provide free physical examinations for area students who plan to participate in sports and other activities during the 2010-2011 school year. The first screening session will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 2, in the Parsons Middle School Gymnasium.

Sports physicals also will be offered July 19 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Commons Area of Oswego High school and August 3 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Commons Area of Labette County High School.

Each year teams of volunteers from Labette Health and its clinics screen more than 500 students in Labette County Schools. Physical examinations are required for participating in sports and many other school activities. Labette Health’s Cherryvale Clinic also conducted free physicals at Cherryvale High School earlier this month.

“These screenings are for students at any school or district, not just the one where the event is being held,” said Lesley Kirkland, director, physician clinics. “If they can’t make it to the one at their school, they can go to one in another district.”

A Pre-Participation Physical Evaluation form (PPE) must be completed and signed by a parent or guardian before the exam. Forms can be obtained at the Kansas State High School Athletics Association website, www.kshsaa.org, or from the school office prior to the screenings.
